David (Duke) King
Artist/ Reefnet Fisherman
Born in 1949 to a symphony musician and a marine engineer, David developed an interest in art at an early age that he has maintained throughout his life. Growing up in Seattle he began studying art in 1960 at the Seattle Music and Art Foundation Children’s Art School. Leaving the Northwest after graduating from Garfield High School, he studied design and painting at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. When he returned to the Northwest, his studies continued in the Graphic’s Department at Western Washington University.
What was to be a summer job after leaving the Bay Area, turned into another passion he has pursued for the last 45 years, commercial salmon fishing. He is one of a handful of Northwest fishermen who still practice an obscure, ecologically sound method known as Reef Netting. His paintings are an expression of the visual vocabulary he has gained while living and working in the islands.
